Millfield represented the English
Schools Swimming Association in Palma, Mallorca in the ISF Swim Cup
competition 2005. Nineteen countries took part in the competition in the
event that comprised of 50m individual events and a 4 x 50 Medley and 6 x
50 Freestyle relay. The competition took place on Friday and Saturday and
there were cultural trips on the Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday
with the closing ceremony on the Sunday evening.
With
many of the team having never competed in an outdoor facility before,
nearly all the swimmers improved their pre event ranking after the heats.
Sebastian Fellows, Peter Hall, Bryony Dunne and Chris Gabbett all made
individual finals and after the first day the boys were lying 3rd
and the girls 7th. On the Saturday morning the finals and relay
swims took place. Sebastian finished 8th in the 50m Free Final
and then secured and excellent 3rd place in the 50m Backstroke.
Peter finished 8th in the same final. Chris Gabbett was placed
6th in the 50m Fly final and Bryony Dunne finished an
exceptional 3rd place (from the outside lane!) in the 50m
Breaststroke. In the relays the girls finished 5th in the
freestyle and 6th in the Medley relay. The boys finished 4th
in their medley and 3rd in the freestyle relay. With all the
points added the girls finished a credible 7th (out of 18
teams) in their competition and the boys a magnificent 3rd
(behind Germany and the Peoples Republic of China, out of 16 teams).
The
team all enjoyed the experience of representing the National Schools Team
and the opportunity given to meet competitors from other countries from
around the world.
Thanks
